The most typical age for menopause is usually between 45 and 55. In some cases it can come early between the age of 40 and 45 while in other cases it can come late between the age of 55 and 60.
It is very rare for a woman’s ovaries to stop working anywhere from the age of puberty to age 40. When this happens, it is referred to as premature ovarian failure or POF and it is normally not due to the normal effects of aging. Some of the causes of premature ovarian failure include autoimmune disorders, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, thyroid disease and diabetes mellitus. When a woman reaches menopause, she is considered to be infertile and therefore cannot conceive.
