Menopause

Menopause is the permanent cessation of reproductive fertility. It can be due to aging or as a result of a surgical procedure that stops the ovaries from producing hormones. These hormones usually make reproduction possible and therefore their production stops, it can influence a woman’s sexual behavior.

This condition in women who still have a uterus and who are not pregnant or lactating is identified by a permanent or at least a one year absence of monthly periods. In women without uterus, it is identified by very high levels of follicle stimulating hormones or FSH. In humans, this condition normally occurs in midlife. It normally signals the end of a woman’s fertile phase.

The decreased levels of circulating estrogen normally affect the entire cascade of a woman’s reproductive functioning from the brain to the skin. The most typical age for menopause is usually between 45 and 55. In some cases it can come early between the age of 40 and 45 while in other cases it can come late between the age of 55 and 60.

It is very rare for a woman’s ovaries to stop working anywhere from the age of puberty to age 40. When this happens, it is referred to as premature ovarian failure or POF and it is normally not due to the normal effects of aging. Some of the causes of premature ovarian failure include autoimmune disorders, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, thyroid disease and diabetes mellitus. When a woman reaches menopause, she is considered to be infertile and therefore cannot conceive.
