Cancer

Another name for cancer is (malignant neoplasm). It’s a disease where a group of cells display uncontrolled growth. Cancer begins in your cells, which are the building blocks of your body. Normally, your body forms new cells as you need them, replacing old cells that die. Sometimes this process goes wrong.

New cells grow even when you don’t need them, and old cells don’t die when they should. These extra cells can form a mass called a tumor. Tumors can be benign or malignant. Benign tumor aren’t cancer while malignant ones are. Cells from malignant tumors can invade nearby tissues. They can also break away and spread to other parts of the body.

Most cancers are named for where they start. For example, lung cancer starts in the lung, and breast cancer starts in the breast. The spread of cancer from one part of the body to another is called metastasis. Symptoms and treatment depend on the cancer type and how advanced it is. Treatment plans may include surgery, radiation and chemotherapy.

Early detection and effective treatment of cancer is increasing survival rates, as it breakthroughs in treatment methods, such as the use of chemotherapy and radiation.

The main categories of cancer include:

1. Carcinoma: cancer that begins in the skin or in tissues that line or cover internal organs.
2. Sarcoma: cancer that begins in bone, cartilage, fat, muscle and blood vessels.
3. Leukemia: cancer that starts in blood-forming tissue such as the bone marrow and causes large numbers of abnormal blood cells to be produced and enter the blood.
4. Lymphoma and myeloma: cancers that begin in the cells of the immune system.
5. Central nervous system cancers cancers that begin in the tissues of the brain and spinal cord.
